4 Ways to keep pets safe and calm during firework season

Fireworks can be scary for cats & dogs, read on for our tips on keeping them relaxed

Our advice for keeping your pets safe this time of year

For some dogs and cats, firework season can be a very stressful and scary time. The best way to help them (and yourself) stay safe and calm during the festivities is to be prepared. Read on to follow our simple tips on how you can help your four-legged family to stay relaxed.

Create a comfortable space

What do we do when we reach a particularly scary scene in a film? Hide behind a pillow or bury down beneath the duvet because that’s where we feel safest. It’s no different for your pet so before Guy Fawkes night, prepare a safe place where your pet can find refuge from any scary bangs or lights. So that they begin to associate this place with security and comfort, feed them in the area and fill it with favourite blankets, cushions and toys.

Remember to remain calm

Our pets are intuitive and often base their behaviour on our own. This means that if you start to panic, they will pick up on this and begin to panic too. As such, it’s important to remember to stay happy and calm during fireworks night, even though it may be difficult if your cat or dog is showing signs of fear and anxiety.

Keep pets inside after dark

Prevent your pets from going out after dark or, if they’re usually in the garden, bring them in for the evening to escape the worst of the loud noises and flashes of light. If possible, take your dog for an early walk, preferably before the sun sets, and make sure they get plenty of exercise to help tire them out. It will help your animals stay calm if you’re home, so try to arrange your plans so that you’re there to comfort them if they need it.

Consider calming supplements

There are a number of supplements available that you can try to help reduce your furry friend’s anxiety through this potentially scary time. We recommend the following products:

  • Dorwest herbal medicines - Valerian Compound Drops or Tablets

  • Pet Remedy Essential Calming Spray or plug in diffusers

  • PhytoPet Calm liquid
