Camping with your Raw Fed Dog

Tips from Nettie, our Illustrious Founder

Camping with your Raw Fed Dog – Tips from Nettie, our Illustrious Founder

When thinking about holidays if you have a dog, or dogs, it often starts with a hunt for an appropriate friend, family member, dog sitter or boarding kennels to look after your dog for the period you are away. However, if you are ‘staycationing’ and planning to take your loving companion with you, the next stage of planning is what raw dog food you’ll be taking to get you through the holiday with your pet.

So, in order to help provide some useful tips our founding mother, Nettie recounted her road trip to Wales and some of the ways she prepared for the adventure with her 30kg dog Solly, who is a 9 year Shepard Cross Rescued Dog.

Solly and Nettie set off in her trusty steed (Campervan) Aljanon and headed for some relatives near the Forest of Dean for the first night prior to heading into the Valleys for the remaining 5 days of the 6 day trip.

So, how did Nettie get on feeding raw dog food for one 30kg active dog for 6 days?

Main rules of Feeding a Raw Dog Food Diet Whilst Camping

1- Keep it simple

2- Be realistic

3- Be flexible

With Solly weighing 30kgs and being 9 years old it meant Nettie needed to take approximately 600g of meat plus supplements (optional) etc. each day. That equated to 3.6kgs of raw dog food.

Nettie had two polystyrene boxes (the ones Nurturing by Nature use to send out our frozen raw dog food) packed with frozen items. She took:

  • 4 x Free-range chicken carcass each weighed approximately 500g

  • 4 x 500g minces

  • 2 x lamb ribs

Emergency rations were 2 tins of tuna in spring water and a 1kg bag of our dried meat treats.

Also in the polystyrene boxes were frozen bottles of home filtered water and goats milk. Nettie had kefir in the fridge which she made daily from defrosted goats milk.

The supplements Nettie was feeding Solly (Keepers Mix, Easy Greens, Billy-No-Mates, Smart Barf and PetCol) were all combined in their required quantities into one tub so she just added the total number of scoops per meal.

The weather was very warm which meant things defrosted a little quicker than Nettie would have liked. So, despite rotating freezer blocks, she found that by day five the frozen items were less than ideal, so that day she fed Solly the tinned tuna.

Nettie did try the local shop and convenience store but neither had any simple meats i.e. chicken wings/ drum sticks or chops, (without any marinade) which would have been more appropriate as Solly isn’t keen on fish.

If you are cooking for yourself, as Nettie suggested, just buy an extra portion for your dog. Again, keep it simple. A meal or two of soaked dried beef natural dog treats is always well received.

We do stock a couple of dry alternatives in our stores which work well alongside raw meals. Grain free kibble and freeze dried meals are handy to have in reserve, or can be fed to make life really easy when travelling.

If you are not touring but staying in pre booked sites or cottages, Nurturing by Nature are able to deliver to your location covering most of the UK. Please ring us for advice and to place an online order.

Please also check with the site manager or owner when booking, that they are happy to receive deliveries. It is important to have the full delivery address and instructions on where the deliveries can be left.

We now use the What3Words app to gain a specific location for our deliveries so perhaps you can ask the site owner for that information prior to making your order.

The bottom line is that Nettie and Solly had an amazing holiday and experienced some great adventures and both ate well the whole time.

We hope that if you choose to go on an adventure with your four legged companion that you can use some of these tips to make your life easier whilst away.

Happy camping!
