Neem - What is it and How Can It Help My Dog?

One of nature’s lesser known but highly effective biodegradable and sustainable alternatives to chemical flea, tick and lice treatment.

In this article we are looking into one of nature’s lesser known but highly effective biodegradable and sustainable alternatives to chemical flea, tick and lice treatment - Neem. It is also extremely good at relieving pets that suffer from itchy or sensitive skin. So we are taking a look at what it is and where it comes from.

What is Neem?

Neem is a plant and its scientific name is Azadirachta Indica, part of the mahogany family. It is a hardy plant that thrives predominantly in the Indian subcontinent and Australia, as well as most of the countries in Africa. The plant, or tree, can actually grow up to 15 metres in height under the right conditions. It can tolerate temperatures of up to 120 Degrees Celsius and can survive on very little rainfall.

Neem is actually one of the most ancient and widely used herbs on earth, having been documented and used for over 4000 years. It is only in more recent years that we in the western world have become aware of Neem and the benefits it has for both humans and animals alike and also around our gardens and homes.

What are the Benefits of Neem?

Neem is one of nature’s most powerful medicines acting as an insect repellent as well as being a great anti-viral, anti-oxidant and fantastic for skin and oral health. The most predominant use with pets is as a tick, flea, mite and lice repellent. It is also very good if your beloved four legged friend is suffering with skin lesions, however, it is not recommended to use it neat if the skin is broken.

Ultimately, the full benefits of using Neem are still being unravelled by scientists to this very day. With new ways of extraction, the medical world is finding new and more varied uses for it all the time. Neem oil has a unique smell which is not liked by everyone, so it is best mixed with a scented Neem shampoo.

How do you Administer Neem to your Pet?

Neem can be applied to the skin of your dog in oil form by way of a spray or shampoo. In the case of dogs, you can add a extra tablespoon of the Neem (plus emulsifier) to Neem and Coconut Shampoo in a jug of warm water to enhance the shampoo and then massage it into the coat, leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse. In dry forms Neem can be sprinkled on your dog’s food as a supplement to help reduce the chances of being attacked by the afore mentioned pesky bugs.

When is it best to Use Neem?

We advise that you start to use the Neem product of your choice in March so that is has time to take effect before the typical bug season kicks off. Having said that, Neem can be used all year round if required to help with those pets that suffer from skin conditions.

We have a number of Neem based products to help resolve any issues you may be experiencing with your dog.

Neem Shield Spray Flea and Bug Prevention Treatment 250ml is so easy to use. You simply apply a light mist over your dog’s coat daily, or as needed. We recommend spraying your dog just prior to going for a walk if you exercise where deer are abundant. You can also spray their sleeping areas to help remedy their condition. Due to the essential oil content this is not suitable for cats.

Neem and Coconut Pet Shampoo 250ml has a soothing formula to help pets with itchy or sensitive skin conditions. As touched upon above, you add a table spoon to a jug of warm water and then massage into their coat. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse off.

CSJ Billy No Mates Natural Herb Mix Supplement for Dogs 325g is available as a powder or a tincture. It is a totally natural herbal dog food supplement that is added into your pet’s raw dog food and then just mix in. The tincture is also suitable for cats.

If you are unsure of which product will help your pet then please do get in touch as we would be more than happy to help.
