Transitioning from Winter into Spring when Feeding a Raw Dog Food Diet

Helpful suggestions to get the most out of your dog’s diet moving into the new season

Transitioning from Winter into Spring when Feeding a Raw Dog Food Diet

Embracing a raw pet food regimen for both dogs and cats can significantly align with their biological needs, offering a diet that mirrors what they would naturally consume in the wild. This natural diet for pets ensures they receive the purest form of nutrition, unadulterated by processed additives. By feeding your canine and feline companions raw, unprocessed meats, bones, and organs, you're catering to their primal dietary requirements, promoting optimal health, vitality, and longevity. This method of feeding not only taps into their ancestral habits but also provides them with the essential nutrients to thrive in their modern-day lives. And by feeding a fresh, natural diet, a raw pet food diet, your pet’s dietary needs will naturally follow the seasons. Unlike a highly processed kibble diet that is manufactured for shelf life and profitability, a raw pet food diet from Nurturing by Nature is created with optimal freshness in mind. We understand that using fresh, human-grade ingredients allows the maximum nutritional benefits to be passed on to your pet.

In one of our recent articles, we delved into some practical tips for maximizing the benefits of a primarily raw dog food diet during the winter. Now, with spring on the horizon, we're offering insights on optimizing your dog’s nutrition for the upcoming season.

Spring is a wonderful time of year, heralded by the emergence of flowers such as crocuses, bluebells, and daffodils, which have appeared even earlier this year. Tender grass shoots are also emerging, poised to capture the morning dew.

Additionally, spring brings a variety of plants that are not only safe but beneficial for our dogs and can be foraged if you're inclined to gather your own supplies (if not, keep reading for our solution).

Let's first look at the ubiquitous dandelion, a plant with significant health advantages for our canine friends.

Dandelions for Dogs

Dogs can consume every part of the dandelion: roots, leaves, and flowers—the latter also known as blooms. The blooms are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, which combat free radicals and bolster the immune system.

The leaves and stems, or 'the greens', are the most nutrient-dense parts of the plant. They can be incorporated into meals to enhance nutritional value when feeding kibble, or provide necessary herbage when opting for the healthier, raw alternative.

The roots offer anti-inflammatory properties that support muscle recovery and help alleviate joint pain.

Rich in vitamin A and several B-complex vitamins, dandelions bolster your pet’s immune system and can elevate their energy levels. They also play a role in preventing infections and illnesses, potentially reducing veterinary visits.

Dandelions are a source of inulin, a prebiotic that fosters a healthy gut by increasing beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.

Lastly, dandelions contain traces of potassium and manganese, essential for maintaining strong teeth and bones.

Nettles or Stinging Nettles for Dogs

The next plant we are focusing on in spring is the abundantly available Nettle, or Stinging Nettle as it’s more commonly known.

Generally, we all try to avoid Stinging Nettles for obvious reasons; however, the health benefits for dogs are wide-ranging. In 10 grams of Nettles, you might be surprised to hear that they contain:

  • 3.4g of protein

  • 297mg of calcium

  • 68mg of phosphorus

  • 3.22mg of magnesium

  • 2mg of beta-carotene

  • 345mg of potassium

  • Vitamins A, C, D, and B-complex

The above nutrients are easily absorbed into the body without causing any stress on your dog’s digestive system, liver, or kidneys.

They make a fantastic supplement, delivering the well-needed trace elements that dogs just don’t get from their food.

Nettles also act as a good antihistamine, reducing allergies and inflammation in their respiratory systems. They have also been found to help with the pain of arthritis.

Nettles can help with anaemia, especially in female dogs. Just half a teaspoon of dried Nettle leaf tips per meal can help.

Nettles act as an effective diuretic due to their content of beta-sitosterol, which is a mild anti-inflammatory in the urinary tract.

The last point we are looking at is Nettle’s ability to provide relief from the constant itch driven by dry skin or flea bites. Simply brew some Nettle tea using the tips and then let it cool completely. Once cool, pour it over the dog’s skin until thoroughly soaked and let it air dry. This will provide long-lasting relief and is far superior to any store-bought conditioner.

Cleavers or Sticky Weed also known as one form of Goose Grass or Sticky Willy

It’s a great anti-inflammatory, serves as a cleansing tonic and diuretic, and purifies the blood and lymphatic system.

Usually the bane of gardeners and farmers alike, this aggressive plant (or weed, as many call it) has an abundance of benefits for our four-legged companions.

Cleavers are rich in vitamin C and silica. They also contain a wide range of fatty acids, flavonoids, and tannins, which essentially means that they benefit the dogs' lymphatic system, cleaning out the lymph nodes while also flushing out the urinary tract and kidneys, allowing them to perform their primary tasks more efficiently.

PLEASE NOTE – If you are foraging these plants yourself, ensure that you pick from an area that hasn't been sprayed with pesticides or poisons that many councils use to kill plants, as this can be harmful to your dog's health.

If you are not likely to forage for the plants discussed above, there is an alternative.

Dorwest Keeper’s Mix Dog Food Supplement: Dorwest Keeper’s Mix is a great alternative should you not have the time to forage for the above herbal supplements. The good thing about Keeper’s Mix is that it contains another five beneficial herbs on top of the three we have already discussed:

  • Kelp – Great for coat growth and pigmentation.

  • Celery Seeds – Provide free movement and suppleness, especially in the joints.

  • Lucerne (alfalfa) – A great source of vitamins A, C, and K, which are vital for general health.

  • Rosemary – Good for digestion and easing potential flatulence. Can also promote a healthy heart.

  • Psyllium – Promotes a healthy bowel and aids digestion.

  • Wild Yam – Great for maintaining a healthy intestine.

Here at Nurturing by Nature, we are happy to advocate for this as one of our dog food supplements as we know the benefits it can bring, and it promotes a prevention-rather-than-cure scenario.

We finish with one of the latest supplements that we know has a wide range of health benefits for dogs: Neptune’s Yard Prebiotic Fermented Seaweed Superfood Dog Food Supplement.

Neptune’s Yard Prebiotic Fermented Seaweed Superfood Dog Food Supplement: Neptune’s Yard Prebiotic Fermented Seaweed is an innovative dog food supplement that is provided by nature and perfected by science.

Seaweed has been used for millennia by coastal inhabitants as a nutritional, easily accessible, and sustainable food source.

It provides those trace elements that are no longer found in our soils, which are vitally important to the development of our beloved pets.

The fermented seaweed prebiotic powder is carried to the lower gut where it aids the probiotic bacteria in digesting more of the food and vitamins found in that food.

Neptune’s Yard helps:

  • Aid healthy digestion and prevent upset tummies.

  • Develop a healthy, shiny coat and reduce skin issues.

  • Reduce arthritis and joint pain.

  • Assist in weight control, reducing obesity and the risk of cancer.

  • Improve the health of the mouth, teeth, and gums.
